As spring approaches and my herb garden starts to come alive, I wanted to share this little studio creation — inspired by an aesthetically pleasing (yet not entirely practical) watering can I had in the studio. The concept? Watering herbs and watching them grow. But instead of sprouting in soil, these herbs pop up as garnishes in a cocktail. To create this image, I styled the finished drink first, then snapped a photo each time I plucked away a garnish. Play it backwards, and voilà — a cocktail garden in full bloom! Even if the other half of this gorgeous trifle wasn't filled with instant mashed potatoes, I would still have a hard time eating it. Behind the scenes, the camera only captures the beauty upfront, while the hidden area is often packed with fillers like mashed potatoes, masa, paper towels, or even marbles. These elements aren’t just space savers—they provide structure and stability, allowing for the precise styling that transforms food into art. A question I’m often asked is if I eat the set food after the shot is captured. This post should answer that question for you.
